Collections are broken down into day by day and a separate collection for the Eastleigh works open day. Eastleigh 100 - Saturday 23rd May 2009: Pictures from the excellent works open day held by Knights Rail Services and The Railway Magazine. http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703455.html Day 1: A jaunt on the North Wales Coast from Holyhead to Chester and back again. http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1701190.html Day 2: An early start from Holyhead on the 0532 Holyhead - Cardiff WAG express, followed by a trip on the Cardiff Bay shuttle and one of the Valley branches. Then it was onto Taunton with the FGW loco hauled service. Voyager to Exeter, 159 to Salisbury and after a long day a 3 car 158 to Southampton. http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703440.html Day 3 of the UK trip stays local around Southampton with a trip to Eastleigh for the open day and in the afternoon to Brockenhurst to see the DRS 37's pass through the station with the wessex man railtour. http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703444.html Day 4 sees a trip along the south coast from Southampton to Brighton to visit the Volk's Electric Railway, the World's oldest operating electric railway. After visiting the VER, it was time for a quick dash to London on a pair of FCC 319's through the Thameslink tunnel to West Hampstead Thameslink. A short walk down West End Lane to West Hampstead North London Line station for a trip to Richmond on a LORO Class 313. After Richmond, it was a trip through home turf via Twickenham to Staines on a SWT 450 for a SWT 455 to Woking and the final trip of the night on a SWT 444 to bring me back to Southampton http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703442.html Day 5: The last day of the UK trip got off to a bad start. Due to an incident at New Milton, outside Bournemouth, all Weymouth / Poole - London services were suspended until further notice. Decided to hop onto the 0933 Southampton - Brighton Southern 377 to Fareham to get moving and then got a 444 on a Portsmouth - Waterloo via Eastleigh to Winchester. A short taxi ride later found me in Alresford station on the Mid Hants Railway for a spin to Alton and back again behind GWR 5205 Class No. 5224 Got the bus back to Winchester and then off to Southampton Airport for the flight home. Highlights include 152 and a ballast at Limerick, 080 and 204 on empty timbers at Waterford, 22040 which has recently gone into service, and other assorted DMUs and locos. The honour fell to 6104, 6319, 6303, 6314, 6312, 6318 with the 0915 Galway - Heuston. The set was withdrawn upon arrival at Heuston. Also a couple of pictures of 22041, the replacement for the Push/Pulls set are included working the 1750 Heuston - Galway. http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1706839.html The Wanderer. It was 25 years ago that electric services commenced in Dublin, the first real revolution on Irish railways in the modern era. Three sets done so far: 8121, 8603/04 and 8122, the latter which looks immaculate but I could not photograph. First off the mark was the Limerick Junction Thunderbird 079 hauling MKIV set 4002 + failed 215 from Limerick Junction to Heuston after an earlier failure. Then the 4 remaining MKIII sets were all in action with: 1710 Heuston - Athlone. 218 + 6 MKIII (7411) 1852 Athlone - Heuston empty 220 + 7 MKIII 1830 Cork - Heuston. 207 + 7 MKIII (7407). 2000 Heuston - Cork 216 + 6 MKIII (7404) Also photographed were a couple of 22000 DMU's in and around Monastervin. Beginning with the coverage of 071 with its weedspray, at the following locations: Drogheda Station - arriving to run round. Beauparc Station - the weedspray, 086 on a Tara as well as a photo from an older era. Navan Station - approach and departure from the town, having run round at Tara Mines. Platin Works - 071 arrives and shunts the weedspray train into the sidings. Sandymount Station - weedspray along with various other commuter and DART services. Dun Laoghaire Station - a new location, featuring the weedspray and various DART service, as well as many past views of the location during reconstruction for the DART. RPSI trains: The RPSI's 'Comeragh' and 'Strawberrry & Cream' railtours featuring 078 and 186 at Connolly Station, as well as numerous other trains and pilot engines. The rest of the 'Comeragh' tour is featured at Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir, Clonmel and Limerick Junction. Misc updates: Galway Station - featuring 216 and 218 working the 13:55 Volvo Race specials as well as comprehensive look at the station. Carolls Cross Station - couple of old photos of this wayside station. Trew & Moy Station - some photos of this former 'Derry Road' station. Verners Bridge Station - same as above. Clontarf Rd Station - features the usual Enterprises and Tara Mines trains hauled by 208, 209, 233, 206, 075, 078 and 086. Hope there's enough variety! One of the Enterprise expresse services used to run through to Dun Laoghaire in the 1980s - early 1990s for passengers taking the boat to Hollyhead, I assume that the shot was of that. It caused some confusion in the house here, as the photographer at that time didn't believe in putting details on the pictures (hence the lack of dates). We assumed it was on the northern line but couldn't think where. Raheny was sort of a favourite until we realised the church was down by Sydney Parade/Merrion.
