Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

I have a notion that NIR did investigate buying one or two driving trailers but the Government would not give them the money. If that is true, maybe the DCDR could donate a few old wagons to them which they could make one out of.... contrast this with the avalanche of new railcars in the South!

NIR 8113 and the Gatwicks arrived into Belfast Central at 1805 this evening on a test run. They were stabled in York Road for most of the morning and afternoon. 111 also in York Road.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

I think the growing number of Derry Line passengers would prefer travelling in a CAF, albeit at 60 m.p.h north of Cullybackey, than trundling along at 50 m.p.h in a loco hauled Gatwick set. GMs are restricted to 50 m.p.h north of Ballymena. Perhaps when the proposed DVT becomes available it could be used on the Bangor to Portadown corridor in order to release a CAF set for the Larne Line.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

Ooooh!!! NIR will have great fun with THAT. Imagine the possibilities for proving runs, training runs, inspection trips, crew training runs, paella-cooking runs, Hebrew-speaking runs, scenic admiration runs, runs to se how many men in immacualte suits and brand new day-glo vests they can fit in the cab, and route familiarisation runs. This DVT wll be well used. A rumour exists that if it is still fit for traffic after all that, it may be used two or three times on passengers turns before withdrawal. We can guesstimate that these runs will be approximately April 2026. Of course, if they repaint it into NIR livery, there will be a lengthy running-in process to ensure that the yellow-painted end is bright enough to be seen 100 miles away by cows, horses and pigs in fields adjacent to the line, members of the public, flying insects, and of course, men in day glo jackets. Half of the remaining Amazon jungle is to be felled to ensure enough paper is available for the Men-With-Clipboards, and the Compliance Taliban, and Health and Jobsworth Police.

Every train needs testing and crew training...
The 22k's now seem to have been her for ever!!! They came in March and still haven't gone into service... Like the 22's before the DVT can go into service it has to undergo the following ( i ) route clearance on... Central - Derry Portadown - Bangor Antrim - Coleraine Central - Larne Knockmore Jctn - Antrim Central - Dublin Connolly (I'm not exactly an expert or anywhere near knowing alot about NIR so there might be a few lines I'm missing or typing the routes in wrong) ( ii ) driver training/ crew training/ gaurd training... ( iii ) door testing... etc... And finnally ( iv ) the 111s are now fitted for push-pull and as you know weren't before so that would also require extensive testing... Give it November and I'd say they'll be in full operation and ready for service... |

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

Well said Drimnagh Road! The ideal line for the Gatwicks is the Derry line if it were not for the fact that loco hauled trains are effectively banned north of Ballymena. This is due to stretches of the Derry line having track in a state of extreme neglect and decay. One can only dream of the benefits 2 sets of 111 Class,4 Mk 2 coaches plus a DVT on the key route between Belfast and Derry compared with a CAF set.

Any idea what this fitting of push-pull working entailed? |

I'd say a linguaphone kit of some description to get a GM AAR Multiple unit system on the 111s to talk to the TDM system on the MK2 DBSO via ex Southern Region Class 488 Gatwick express Multiple Unit trailer cars!!!

Of course it'll have to be able to talk in Hebrew while cooking a paella and admiring the scenery... :-)

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

Cant wait to see if NIR actually make effective use of this train as they seem to be unable to do so at present. This set should be out doing the 17:15 to newry , ran round and back to central ommitting GVS as it does at present . People would use the service, quiet and comfortable without dymphna babbling on in the background.....
On a seperate not does anyone else find the announcements annoying? |

Those announcements about taking your belongings with you and all that health and safety rubbish are VERY annoying, and an insult to the intelligence of a mentally subnormal dung beetle.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

The only announcement I heard on an NIR CAF was the toilet lock message, I was on one from Drogheda to Dublin last year as a replacement for a failed DD set. But I absolutely despise the announcements on the I Mk4s, to the extent that I'd go to Tralee via Limerick now to get the Mk3s.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

Really? I have to disagree I find the MK4 announcements excellent, very clear reliable and free of regional dialect issues so to speak!!! Not to mention the fresh feeling air con as opposed to the horrible stuffy MK2 MK3 aircon. I am a big fan of the MK4s and go out of my way to avoid non push pull MK3s.

Working from the loco and working from the DT... Any help? |

Gatwicks roaring through Moira last night about 6.15pm on yet another training run. (How difficult would it actually be to carry passengers on this evenin run??)
Interestingly she was traveling substantially faster than the Enterprise set that followed about 15mins later.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

The simplest method of push pull is I.Es system where the MK3 control cars are basically constructed using spare standard GM loco cab parts such as Notch Controllers brake handles etc. The loco and control car communicate using standard AAR jumper cables the length of the train and effectively the loco thinks the control car is another locomotive. This system is the system already on 111-113
TDM is a system devised by BREL in the 1970s/80s which allows Loco control signals to be passed through standard MK1/2/3/4 train lighting cables thus allowing most carriages to be suitable for push pull working witout major mods. This system is already on the DBSO. Southern Region stock communicate using 27pin jumpers I think but completely different to the AAR jumpers and located at High level away from where the electrified 3rd rail would have been. The choice of which system to go for is NIRs but to me its a no brainer go down the AAR route and fit the 8 coaches and the DBSO with AAR jumpers that way any 201 can also work with the set giving a standard job alongside the De-Deitrichs which are AAR fitted, and if I.E are sneaky maybe we might see a push pull fitted 111 on a MK3 push pull before they visit Gwent Demolition!! That would be incredible a Blue GM pushing orange carriages!! |

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

In my opinion, if the 111s (or even 121s!) can be kitted out for push pull then surely 201-205 and 210-214 can. I'm surprised they didn't do this, would give these locos much more to do.
