Gatwick's & 111 made an unscheduled 1 minute stop at platform 3 at 07:40 hrs this morning before being sent on to Portadown. They had to stop on the 3rd line to let the Portadown / Belfast express stop at platform 2.

111+Gatwicks must have failed on the 10/9/07 as was still at Lisburn at 0815 with 111 still facing Portadown off the end of platform 3.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

At last! Im online!!! Was almost for giving up.
Ive been tryin to get the Gatwicks for the last week, due to various reasons, train failures being amonst them it hasnt happened yet!! Hopefully tomorrow manages to go to plan!! Any idea if there have been any evening runs? Pretty sure Ive heard a GM in the evenings a few times. Any news on the progress of the DT? |

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

Gatwicks failed in Portadown this morning again 13th Sept. brake problems. The GM you here in the evening is the Gatwick set doing a training run for staff who apparently need retrainng on how the train operates. No plans to run the Gatwick set in the evening rush hour.

I note that the max speed of these mk2f type are 70MPH. Surely if these are air braked they should be allowed top speed of 100.

I have heard there Drimnagh Road that they are allowed up to 90 MPH but NIR prohibit this under their control, personally i find that and the brake problems on the Gtawicks v.annoying on Enterprise north...

NIR also limit the 111s to 70mph. No idea why, maybe they weren't fitted with the dampers like the 071s were in the mid 80s?

Yes they were fitted at around the same time and also got the same frame mods [as the 071s] at Inchicore. |

Re: Gatwick's Watch
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gatwicks on test today, passed through Lisburn approx 12.45 This is crazy. What sort of testing do they need? Do NIR have to test every train before every run? Those carriages seem to have spent half their "working" life as graffiti canvas for the pond life who live round Adelaide Halt, another 20% doing test runs, priving runs, training runs, blah blah zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, and perhaps 10% of the time doing a single return trip per day - only half of which is fare paying. Is there a single equivalent of this sort of utter idiocy in the entire world? Doubtless this trial run had seven men in the cab, all in immaculate clean hi-vizvests, and another - say 20 - on the hardly-used cushions.... about twice the number of passengers this train has carried in its entire life here. |

More likely crew training was being done rather than train testing.

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

It is crazy thet the Gatwicks only do one one-way passenger run a day, but hey it wasn't so long ago they were doing nothing at all.
Their interiors are in fine condition and if converted to push-pull operation and refitted with tables they should make a fine Enterprise standby set. |

Re: Gatwick's Watch | ||

This comment is a bit pro-loco I admit however in a way it is sense. The best use for the Gatwicks would be to have 2 trains on the Belfast-Londonderry route formed of.
111 + mk2 + mk2 + mk2 + mk2driving van NIR should buy two driving vans, which are also useful as they can seat 32 plus the guards's accomodation and cab. Hey presto you have two quality intercity trains for an intercity route, with two standard mk2s free for spare/maintenance. Of course you'd need to have all 3 locos in working order (one for stand-by) not to mention track that can actually take a 111 and four coaches. The released cl3000s can be used for the main Bangor-Portadown Corridor, they are not been used to their potential on the Londonderry anyway other than the high speed stretch between Central and Antrim |
