Hmmmmmm...... In the UK there was more than a tendency for "non essential" maintenance to be skipped on stock due for withdrawal - indeed pretty
much all maintenance stopped. There did seem to be a quite deliberate attempt to make the "old" stock seem tatty in order to make the new stock
This was seen most recently on the former Southern Region lines when slam door stock was frankly deliberately run down in the last few years of service. In
fairness SWT kept standards high until almost the end, but South Central/Southern certainly ran slam doors in a very tatty state for quite some time until
However - I am quite prepared to accept that this is not the case with IE.
UK stock was indeed deliberately run down. Mark 3s on IE are not getting into the state that Virgin let the mark 2s and mark 3s get into for example -
toilets generally work, and lighting and heating is OK. How long this will last remains to be seen - the 3A set does seem to be attracting criticism, although
the bit I travelled on on the 1750 the other week didn't seem too bad.

Any stock with an uncertain future will not be kept in a pristine condition in Ireland or the UK for that matter. Spares start to dry up and as a fleet
slides down the list of importance and with age, the premier stock has to get the first priority of the Depots. The Cravens were not at their best when MK2s
and MK3s were the premier coaches on the Heuston services. The MK2s are now bottom of the pile with MK4s and MK3s now needing lots of attention. Its the way
the rolling stock cycle goes. Very hard to justify to an accountant giving a MK2 or MK3a a heavy interior clean full repainting of toilets when it could be in
the back of a scrap truck shortly. Sad but harsh reality of things.
