I though it is a good idea to start a thread to keep tabs on 124/134.

124 is still in Inchicore, it looks like the trees and grass are starting to take over this loco, it could be the end of the line for this baby.

It will be a great shame if 124 is to be broken up at Inchicore, leaving just 134 as the sole survivor. If 134 is to be preserved, probably by the ITG, and 124 is to be scrapped then we'll never have multiple 121 hauled trains again! Last year 123 was there out of use, waiting to be scrapped I pursume, and unfortunately if seems 124 might be going the same way. I do hope someone is formulating a plan to save her!

On the contary, 123 is in quite good condition!
She was retired with the intention to be kept aside for parts for 124 and 134; her CAWS pack being removed. As it is, there was many parts kept from both 121 and 141 class locos so there won't be any danger of 123 being eaten away by a running shed. With a decent service and CAWS slotted back in, she could in theory be returned to service; if this happens is another story as priority is with getting the 22000's into service and learning aboout same. With 121's, they are synonomous with double working so two need to be preserved if at all; it just makes sense to keep 124 and 134 given their historical significance. |

I thought 124 & 134 are to be saved by the ITG is this not true.

I believe 123 has a failed radiator as well as having no CAWS equipment. But there is one available (ex 127 I think?) so it's not impossible.

124 and 134 are going to be preserved, the ITG are waiting for irish rail to replace the traction motor on 124 then we will see if it goes back to service or if the ITG will take it, unlike other locos the 121s cannot run with 1 tration motor broke, all tration motors must be in working condition.
(It could be a while) I cannot see 123 ever returning to service it will be stripped of parts just like the ITG done with 015 in Inchicore. As it stands some parts of 123 are already been taken off. |

I honestly don't think the ITG will have enough to preserve both 121s and a 141/181 while having enough to get the Metrovick in Carrick on Suir running again...
Now maybe they do but with no railtours running revenue will be slow in coming and I don't think many people will have signed up to the memebership this year... While saying that maybe they do don't get me wrong, I hope the ITG contradict me by a long shot... |

A railtour envolving 226&231 heading south past the curragh and arriving back with 124&134 is still quite possible.
All is needed is structural changes, co-operation, a fair playing field and government commitment. It was done for the canal heritage of this country likewise it can be done for the railway heritage. |

Let's face it, poor old B103 at Carrick-on-Suir ain't never gonna run again.
[tried to insert a photo here but it didn't work!] If you leave any machine laying for that long it will be practically impossible to get going again, without full, ground-up restoration. And lots of money (or a TV show!). Let's hope 124 isn't just left to rot like 103, she needs to be kept running. A. |

Re: 124/134 News | ||

There is another issue, which I hope does not stand in anyone's way, but is worthy of comment. That is this - in GB, where many diesels are preserved, private money is often involved - i.e. a Pete Waterman-style person with a fat cheque book, as opposed to blood, sweat, tears and hard earned cash of a group of enthusiasts. This type of preservation funding is almost totally absent in Ireland, but has achieved so much across the water. It is therefore unrealistic for us to build up our expectations in terms of comparisons with what happens there. This applies to steam locos and preserved branch lines as much as it does to diesels.

Re: 124/134 News | ||

By the time 124 & 134 are eventually withdrawn they will be pretty worn locomotives considering that they were expected to by taken out of service back in June 2003 and have been flogged ever since. However due to their recent overhauls they are noted as being in better condition then many of the 141/181 locos hence their extended life span. The eventual purchase price for the pair should be a lot less now than in 2003 due to wear & tear etc.
I'd expect 124 to be presented to the ITG in fully operational condition. That said I would not rule out 124 being returned to full service before being offically withdrawn. It makes you wonder about the other 121s such as 128 which was sent to the cutters in switched off condition! A low oil button kept tripping was the only fault!! Similarly 135 was fully operational in switched off condition prior to being stripped and sent for scrapping. 133 had a simple defect of loosing water prior to being scrapped while 129 had a fumey cab and 131 like 123,124 & 134 had been overhauled! I am sure similar fates have greeted the 141/181 classes in more recent times. Last thing a BoBo would want to do now is visit Inchicore for a new light bulb!! |

Yeah there are some well known-and wealthy-faces in the UK preservation scene, Pete Waterman as mentioned and Mark Owen are two.
So, would it be possible for a couple of wealthy train enthusiasts to buy a loco and keep it in operational condition? Or would they have to form a group? Not that I personally know any wealthy train enthusiasts and I am certainly not one. Just wondering out of interest if it would be possible. For example if I won a million and invested it, for example a retired 141 would I be able to continue to run it on IE metals in years to come? |

Re: 124/134 News | ||

Drimnagh, yes, what you say would be theoretically possible. What would be required would either be that the owner had such a bottomless pit of money that he could hire IE or NIR to maintain it to their standsrds, prvide crews and in the fture crew training and road practice with it, and pay for all that. He could operate tours with it, possibly subsidised by him, possibly making money for him, depending on the vagaries of a market infitesimally smaller than in GB. Or, he could operate it on a private line of his own making, or if an outfit like Downpatrick had room for it (which they don't!) he could approach them about keeping it there under whatever arrangement the two parties chose to come to. I mentioned last night that such private sponsorship was extremely rare in Ireland - which it is - but it is not totally unknown. At Downpatrick, one of the the three G class locos was rescued and restored by a Society member (who is now sadly deceased, but it all came from his wallet). There is a privately owned Wickham Car there, undergoing restoration at another member's expense. The ITG own another one there, plus the other 2 G's. At Whitehead, a separate, but also deceased former RPSI member put up almost all the cash for the restoration of loco 85 about twenty years ago, and the same man made several other very hefty donations towards its maintenance over the years. Another gentleman at one stage offered to fund about 50% of another main line steam loco's restoration, provided the other half of the money could be had from grant aid. After two or three year's intense lobbying for such funding, despite initial broad approval, the scheme never got off the ground. About 15 years ago, another RPSI member offered to assist sunstantially with the restoration of a passenger vehicle, though the work did not progress for a number of reasons. Finally, at Downpatrick again, a 6 wheel passenger coach is the subject of a current restoration effort at the expense of one of the members.

Dont know about having to have a bottomless purse, that sounds very similar to the current steam set up on IE!
Anyhow back to 121s, a clip of B132 on 'Reeling in the Years' yesterday on its side after an accident on the Wexford line in 1975. The 121s were/are quite a photogenic locomotive even in a derailed position! |

There was a clip on "Reeling in the Years" (an EXCELLENT TV programme) some time ago which showed a very brief glmipse of a 121 in greay and yellow - I think on the Mallow-Waterford line but may have been elsewhere. Next time they are showing the mid 1960's era look out for it....

I have been told by a friend in Inchicore that 124 will more than likely never run on the mainline while in IE ownership again. Of course I'd like to be proven wrong by seeing somebody report a sighting on this thread, but apparently its knackered and so maybe it would probably be a good time to pass it into preservation

I hope when they get preserved they go into silver and yellow livery, that was the best livery Irish Rail ever had.
( any photos to jugle my memory would be great) |
