It does no business any good to have frustrated customers, regardless of the cause of such frustration.

I would prefer to see the railway with lots and lots of satisfied customers, getting repeat business from the ones they have, and getting lots more new ones every year. They will do that by providing the fare paying public with clean, reliable, comfortable, frequent ,safe, and competitive travel. For evidence, look no further than the Sligo line over the last two years -the highest growth rate on the network. Achieved, in the main, with the despised DMU.
95%+ of fare paying passengers in any mode neither know nor care what type of train, plane or bus they are in, once the above criteria are met.

What is fairly certain though is that if we don't invest in our network, rolling stock, facilities etc then the passengers would drift away to other modes. Every business needs to invest capital and to modernise if it is to survive. If it does not, it will ultimately go out of business. We came close with Knockcroghery.
Falling passenger numbers, decaying trains and infrastructure, and death by a thousand cuts is not a place I want to go back to. I am all for a thriving growing business, however that is achieved. I would personally prefer if it was with loco hauled trains, but if not, then so be it in my view. If the railway can continue to grow and to meet the strict criteria set out by the mandarins in the Dept of Finance, then the chances are better that it will still be around for us all to enjoy and benefit from in the long term. Surely, as enthusiasts, that is better than the alternative?

Now freight, on the other hand.........
