Hi all,
here is a pic of the new overbridge on the Lower Glandmire Road, Cork that was installed yesterday and this morning: http://finbarrsrailwaypho...topic.net/p57457077.html The span was built onsite over the last few weeks. It was hoisted into place over the last 48hours. Finbarr. PS: its great to see that the old footbridge was not scrapped! |

I think it's really great to see that much of the old infrastructure is being retained and restored. I think it will really add to the enjoyment for
commuters on the service. The locals along this line should be really proud to have such a great asset. I was just wondering why there was so much land
allocated for the trackbed when the line is mostly single track. Was the line originally double track? And I was particularly interested in the foto of the
line beyond Midleton leading to Youghal. Is there any chance or even talk about the line being extended to Youghal at some point in the future? Especially
since the station building in Youghal (despite being overgrown) has been fenced off for some kind of protection. I know, I know - let's learn to crawl
before we walk and all that. I'm just getting carried away - these are exciting times! :-)

Hi all,
was walking around Midleton yesterday, and all signals in the area are turned on including Midleton station (all but the terminating signals are active) and the signals protecting Knockgriffin and Waterrock level crossings. All set to danger. The Midleton - Youghal line has been preserved under Cork County Council's long term transport plans... so maybe another 20 years Finbarr. PS: Correct me if I am wrong, but did Midleton station open 150 years ago this year? 10 November 1859? |

That may be, but as so often happens, what is happening in reality versus what's in some plan can be rather different. There's at least one location (Ballyquirke) where a local landowner has helped himself to the right of way. As he has been not been challenged on this by the rightful owners (us the taxpayers in the guise of IE) for quite a number of years now there are already probably issues with 'squatters rights'. And then of course there is the three miles or so between Killeagh and Youghal where the railway has been lifted and effectively abandoned. Indeed, despite being supposedly on a 'care & maintenance' programme, one could probably argue quite easily in any court of law that the line beyond Midleton has been abandoned depite the lack of a formal notice. Is that Ballyquirke, Co Galway? As in the old Galway - Clifden line? If yes, I had not realised that IE/CIE still owned the trackbed.
Beyond Midleton, e.g. the Park over bridge to Milltown/West Park level crossing, you would be forgiven for thinking that there was no railway line there. In fact, Mogeely (station & level crossing) and Killeagh (station) are about the only parts that currently look anything like a railway! The obstruction (someone's garden) just after Glouthaune/Cobh Junction on the Midleton line was cleared fairly lively. I would not be too worried about other obstructions on the Midleton - Youghal line. Finbarr |

No, Ballyquirke crossing at MP 13.25 just before Killeagh.
AFAIK, the obstruction you refer to at Cobh Jct had to be CPOed. i.e. IE bought back what was rightfully their property. Mark

Some of this carry-on: buying back what should have never been abandoned in the first place, paying farmers over the odds for land for motorways in excess of
requirements (think of how wide some of those central reservations are), are a bit like re-capitalising delinquent banks!

Our overall society has far too much scope for chancers. If someone extends their garden where they don't own the land, it should not matter how long they
are unchallenged; the owner should have permanent right to just bulldoze it, even if they've built their house over it, without either notice or
compensation being offered.

Hi,
Travel Time / Station 00:00 / Midleton 00:07 / Carrigtwohill 00:12 / Glouthaune 00:15 / Little Island 00:23 / Cork I think an 06:45 train to Cork would be a good one to connected to the 07:30 to Dublin. At the moment, the earliest train to Dublin would be the 08:30, with a change in Mallow. But it is a good timetable thou! Finbarr. |

Will this mean there will be a fifteen minute frequency between Glounthaune and Cork when the Cobh line is taken into consideration?

Well if the Cobh timetable remains the same, there will be 15min frequency @ peak times between Cork - Glounthaune. This is great news for anyone working in
Little Island:
ex Cork 06:30/ 06:45(M)/ 07:00/ 07:15 (M)/ 07:30/ 07:45 (M)/ 07:55/ 08:15 (M)/ 08:30/ 08:45 (M)/ 09:00/ 09:15(M) ex Glouthaune (to Cork) 07:14 / 07:27 / 07:44/ 07:57 / 08:14 / 08:27 / 08:39 / 08:57 / 09:14 / 09:27 / 09:44 ex Cork 16:30 / 17:00 / 17:15 (M) / 17:30 / 17:45 (M) / 18:00 / 18:15 (M) / 18:30 (M) is a Midleton train Finbarr. |

That's good to hear. Nice to see a regular interval, clockface timetable for Little Island and Glounthaune in rush hour. Now if only they did the same in
Dublin...
