“RIVER LAGAN” & “RIVER FOYLE” DUPLICATE NAMEPLATES
The Irish Traction Group (ITG) has been approached by a former member who now wishes to auction off two duplicate brass nameplates, “RIVER LAGAN” and “RIVER FOYLE”, and donate a percentage of the sale proceeds to the Group, subject to a minimum price being reached. These are two of the four spare nameplates (two of each name) that the Group had cast for Translink NI Railways' locomotives 208 and 209.
In late 1995 the ITG offered to supply Translink NI Railways with the nameplates for GM locomotives 208 and 209, an offer which was subsequently accepted by the railway company. Four brass plates of each name were originally cast. Two plates of each name were then presented to Translink NI Railways in March 1996 for the two locomotives. The two "RIVER LAGAN" plates were subsequently fitted to locomotive 208, and the locomotive still carries them today. However, the two "RIVER FOYLE" plates for locomotive 209 were never fitted for some inexplicable reason, and subsequently went "missing" - the whereabouts of which are still unknown today.
The other two "spare" plates of each name were then sold by the ITG to help cover the cost of those supplied to Translink NI Railways. It is two of these nameplates that are now going up for auction.
The auction will begin at 18:00 on Thursday 29th September 2011 and will close at 18:00 on Sunday 9th October 2011. The plates will be on sale via eBay under the section ‘Collectables > Transportation > Railwayana > Hardware Railwayana > Plates/Signs’. The starting price will be £ 95, no reserve, with postage & packing of £ 20 to mainland UK, £ 25 to Northern Ireland and £ 30 to the Irish Republic. The link to the auctions can be found here:
