So- someone explain please - do the currently-operating DVTs have any traction or are they just controlling the trailing loco?
Do they contain generators for HEP? I have wondered what the plume of blue smoke is from. Ta A. |

It's when the Locomotive (as in the 201 class on the Enterprise) provides electric power for the rest of the train (heating, lighting, etc). This is by way
of contrast with the Cork MK4 trains where the Loco just pushes and pulls, with the electricity for heating etc being generated separately in the DVT (or
DVGT?) at the other end. The Enterprise DVTs have no power generating capacity whatsoever.

Andy, the DVTs are independant of the loco insofar as the train supply of electricity is concerned. There are MkIIIs with Generator Vans and the MkIII
Push/Pulls with DVTs - where the generator is under the floor.
Before you ask, the Gen Van needs more punch as there is electricity required for an 8 car train, Air Conditioning and [usually] a dining car with 'fridge, etc. The DVT Gen wouldn't cope with that. The MkIV DVT has no 'passenger' compartment as the Generator is so much bigger for the Air Conditioning and other passenger comforts. The Enterprise DVT has no generator at all - but a 1st Class saloon and small parcels van as the HEP comes [most times] from the locomotive. It is a pure co-incidence that HEP stands for Heating & Electrical Power. It is 'Head End' as in 'in the locomotive' which traditionally went at the 'head' i.e. front of the train. Steam Engines of course had a type of 'head end' in that they provided steam for the train heating. Hope this clears up all the Qs! DSE |

6105 + 5 MK3 (all standards) + 216 (push mode) on the 17:45 ex Tralee to Dublin. Noted at Farranfore at 17:58. 6105 is still part of a 6 car set! 17:45 ex Tralee is a long link - 4hrs 21mins! F. |

The MK3 Push Pulls are in tatters, this week 6105 was causing mayhem with the 1710 Athlone the other day whole coach locked off, it was replaced by 6101 on
that set 6102 presumably was taken out of service as the 1325 Limerick seems to be a MK3 set so far this week. There was a Push Pull intermediate dumped in
Mallow for weeks also hence the Co9rk set only being a 3 piece.

The Cork Push / Pull set was swapped on Tuesday 4th November with 6104 6307 6312 6304 going empty to Dublin and 6105 6317 6309 6303 hauled by 226 going empty
to Cork following behind the 1125 Heuston - Limerick service. Both trains operated via Limerick Junction Direct Curve to turn the sets.
In other Push / Pull news, 6101 is currently employed on Waterford line diagram as a 6 car set and 6102 on the Athlone Push / Pull diagram as a 5 car set. 6103 is withdrawn following a catstrophic engine failure in Tralee several months ago. 6104 seems to be the spare control car I noticed the intermediates from
the set have vanished and the 13:25 Limerick is now a solid 7 piece MK3 working leaving only 2 push pulls active 6101 as a 6 piece on the Waterford, 6102 as a
5 piece on the Athlone and 6105 in Cork as a 4 piece on the Tralee.
If thats Real. I prefer fake.
