Well, that didn't last long !
Hazelhatch indeed 11-4-93: ...and the other day:

Excellent past/present shot there railrust! There appears to be an identical one on the exterior of the main station building at Sallins. I presume they were lamp holders.
There are probably some more, for example a smaller type with a different design I photographed at Colbinstown recently. |

Yep, lamp holders. The lanterns were removable so they could be taken down and reservoirs filled and trimmed. Not many of the lanterns about now as they were
tinplate and rusted through from being outdoors.

It's the base of the derelict water tower at Farranfore Station, adjacent to the former Valentia bay platform.

Hope we can keep this interesting thread going.
Maybe the more veteran gricers can identify this glimpsed location, and maybe even enlighten us on some of their stories?

If it is the Silvermines branch, IE marked their territory last year by painting the level crossing gates on the Nenagh road!

101sean wrote:Did ya happen to notice if they painted the level crossing gates on the Silvermines branch, the people of Silvermines where glad to see the back of the mine, the gradient on the branch was very steep, you could hear the Aclass for miles, it was a very dirty kip, you'll never see its like again, some people will say ''thank God'' the dust got in the eyes, up the nose, if nothing else, ya'll always remember the dust, then when it closed the site was used by guys in rubber suits and masks to spray wagons and fumigate rolling stock. There was talk about binliner trains to Silvermines and possible 2x141s haulage, a gricer's paradise, but the people of Silvermines where having none of it, and so the Silvermines branch which opened in 1966, died a death, but all the poison and that awful tailing pond is still there, but the trains have gone. Never knew about that proposed binliner train, bit like Magheramorne in the north. Does anyone know when a train last reached Silvermines (presumably to
collect sprayed wagons)?
Anyway, can anyone identify this location and its significance?

Grange AHB. First AHB on the CIÉ system.

Correct Three Aspect, it is indeed Grange AHB, installed as early as 1962, one year after the UK's own. One wonders if any of CIE's ancient steam locos
would have passed by such then modern railway equipment.
