A Mk3 worked Waterford - Heuston yesterday, Sunday the 19th, passing through Thomastown early afternoon.

A sad day indeed, the last daytime out and back loco hauled train from Dublin. Needless to say as it was 201 hauled I never bothered with it, never the less

Could you enlighten us as to why the H and S people think it has to be a single headlight? To avoid being misteken for a truck? Instead it might get
mistaken for a motorbike!
Sometime I wonder about the H and S people: do they feel obliged to come up with new initiatives simply to justify their existence? |

UK practice is one high intensity (right at day, left at night) and two low intensity (one on roof, other opposite to high) to give a triangular formation. I
believe this is standard across several countries in Europe, and is intended to avoid confusion with road vehicles etc.
Yellow paint is interesting. It can look awful if not integrated into the livery, but having been trackside, on a bright day you do see the yellow before the headlights. Don't forget also that in the UK the yellow was introduced before high intensity lights (in the UK), when diesels were painted nice green to blend into the landscape - and trying to remove a "safety" feature is near impossible in these lawyer induced, backside covering days! "Where we ought to learn from Britain is in their attitude to train procurement (pro-EU) and in their railfreight policies. " Eh? Train procurement - the biggest order in years (IEP, or whatever it is now called) has just gone to Japan, as did the HS1 domestic trains (class 395) - EU input will be little more than bolting together and low value items, and subsequent maintenance. Don't believe government spin! Freight policy in the UK also not as pro-rail as may be believed; much of the increase over the last few years have been hauling coal from Scotland to power stations in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, rather than from local pits. If a railway cannot increase tonne/km in that scenario, then there is something wrong! Other traffics are flat, declining, or largely disappeared (eg mail), and the fuel duty escalator for road transport has been scrapped following protests from the road lobby. Not too different from here! Sean

I have no qualms about UK safety standards or railway operating standards - indeed nobody could do. But I do have two issues: why the obession here with
blindly following what they do over there? NIR may be a different kettle of fish being inside UK boundaries, but IE? I simply can't accept that trains are
a lot safer with yellow ends - they look hideous. And worse, to the point of inanity, is the recent business of copyiong the thin orange line they put at
cantrail level - do we really need to beware of overhead electric wires on NIR and the Ballina branch? Surely, surely, we aren;t so totally stupid that we need
to look at a little thin line on the upper side of a carriage to remiond us we are in fairview Depot! Land of Saints and scholars? Gimme a break.
I remember an old man telling me one time "When Brirain does something good, we ignore it. When Britain does something stupid, we copy". Will we ever learn to think for ourselves? I rest my case: yellow ends are ugly to look at, and more importantly, of little or zero use. Will they start insisting on them on RPSI steam locos? Rant over. Time for a cup of tea. I'm getting to that age. |

Great shot there CR! Brings back memories of when I was standing on those very steps in July of last year. After landing in Melbourne airport at 0530 in the
morning we got a bus straight to Southern Cross bus & rail station, to be greeted by the unmistakeable sound of an "071" (aka: N class) notching
up and being un-coupled from its train. Despite having travelled 24 hours and hardly knowing my own name at that stage, I still managed a smile! |

I assume the 17:10 goes over to units during the week as well.
