finnyus wrote:Many thanks Finbarr, the timetable is very interesting, anyway back today, Malcolm Stead was on hand at Midleton for the arrival of the first railcar working 2710+2709 (the railcar gricing crowd will be proud) with the arrival of politicians Flange Lubricator made a very quick exit, doesn't grice politicians, giving them a very wide bert, if I post up Malcolm's political photos Flange will never speak to me again, so the Podge & Rodge photos to view will have to settle for photobucket or the trash can, or PM 2710+2709 arriving at Midleton
2709+2710 at Midleton looking towards Youghal.
2709+2710 at Midleton down platform looking towards Glounthaune (Cobh Junction)
Another view of 2709+2710 at Midleton down platform, station building and former signal cabin nicely restored, also noting no ''run around loop'' at Midleton to facilitate loco hauled trains, railcars only!!!!
Finally 2709+2710 leaving Midleton after its short visit and photo opportunity by the politicians eeekk couldnd resist a dig, sorry....
All photos courtesy by Mr Malcolm Stead, eh no thanks to Mr Flange Lubricator, a railcar zone, no locos need apply. Regards h.gricer |

As finnyus said 2709 was at Midleton today. It was in fact the the first railcar to visit the line since it was rebuilt and probably the first unit on the line
for a very long time and it was on a gauging trial today. Driver training is due to start shortly.
BTW is there an election on by any chance for Noel Dempsey and the CIE Chairman John Lynch to suddenly appear when the first train arrives at Midleton? there can't be... |

First train will depart at 6.45am ... some day
By Sean O'Riordan, Irish Examiner Tuesday, May 26, 2009 THE first train leaving Cork for Midleton will depart from platform one at 6.45am - only trouble is nobody knows on what day that will be. A press conference organised by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey descended into farce yesterday when he announced the timetable for the €75 million Cork-Midleton commuter rail service. He couldn't say on what date the trains would roll. Iarnród Éireann brought a special train down to Midleton station for the minister's photoshoot. He got in it with FF camp followers and Iarnród Éireann officials. The engines revved and it looked like they were all off for a little spin. But the train remained stationary until the minister disembarked a short time later. Unfortunately, according to an Iarnród Éireann spokesman, "the train wasn't certified to carry passengers". The company spokesman said it's hoped the service will start rolling sometime in July. But he, too, couldn't provide a date. On numerous occasions during the past few years both Mr Dempsey and his predecessor at the department, the late Seamus Brennan, have been up and down the track emphasising to everybody who will listen that the train is coming. Mr Dempsey described the timetable announcement as "an important landmark". He said the service would allow thousands of people to enjoy a stress-free rail journey. When the service does get up and running there will be 20 trains each way daily. Trains will run every 30 minutes at peak time and every hour at off-peak from Monday to Friday. Sixteen trains will operate each way on Saturdays, with eight on Sundays. This story appeared in the printed version of the Irish Examiner Tuesday, May 26, 2009 |

I wonder when the last RAILCAR (as ooposed to loco hauled train) was ever in Midleton? Any takers? Did AEC's ever go there?

From today's Irish Examiner: Lines crossed for commuter train timetable By Sean O'Riordan Thursday, June 04, 2009 IT was supposed to be about connectivity - but Iarnród Éireann has its lines crossed again. Unfortunately, the planned new Cork-Midleton train timetable - launched last week in a blaze of photograbbing opportunism by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey - isn't all it's cracked up to be. On Monday week last, the minister produced the timetable but, farcically, couldn't say exactly when the €75 million service would start. Now it also transpires that Iarnród Éireann - which prided itself on ensuring the Midleton service connected with Dublin-bound trains - was forced to admit a faux pas. The blunder was spotted by eagle-eyed TD David Stanton, who was obviously checking "connectivity" to ensure an early morning arrival at the Dáil. He contacted Iarnród Éireann when he noticed that the first train departing Midleton in the mornings was at approximately 7.15am. "It would be due to arrive in Cork at 7.38am, eight minutes after the departure of the Cork to Dublin train," said Deputy Stanton said. He pointed out that the 7.30am train from Cork to Dublin is the service most people travelling to the capital on business for the day would use. "It makes no sense at all to make this very important service unavailable to passengers connecting from Midleton," said the FG deputy. He pointed out that in his opinion Iarnród Éireann had got its priorities for the first trains the wrong way round. Few people would be travelling from Cork to Midleton at that time in the morning, whereas commuter traffic in the opposite direction would be far greater, A spokesman for Iarnród Éireann said they were looking closely at Mr Stanton's suggestion. "I contacted Iarnród Eireann. I have been advised that they are now looking to reverse the proposed schedule, with the first train leaving from Midleton at 6.45am to arrive in Cork at 7.07am. This would have commuters from Midleton and Carrigtwohill in Kent Station with plenty of time for the Cork-Dublin service," said the deputy. Read more: "| Irish Examiner" - http://irishexaminer.ie/ireland/lines-crossed-for-commuter-train-timetable-93301.html#ixzz0HRjTkrGs&A What he says makes perfect sense! Otherwise Midleton to Dublin on the current Midleton timetable means that the first train possible to Dublin is the 08:30 to Mallow and then the 08:57 Tralee train to Dublin - three changes... not really appealing to anyone! |

The first train out of Midleton should be 0645. A 1645 Cork to Midleton would not go amiss either.

AND even something similar to the Cobh line, the 05:50 Cobh - Cork that connects with the 06:30 to Dublin.

Two things about post 202,
(1) It would have made sense to install a run around loop as how is a loco hauled railtour ever going to get down there? They didn't think it through very well during planning as Irish Rail don't exactly do top 'n' tail do they and I certainly have no intention of going down there on a unit. (2) I don't think I've ever seen the front information screeens on a 2700 work before, now that is a surprise! 57 & Pendolino drags are back every Saturday on the North Wales Coast |

Drimnagh Road wrote:(1) Sure couldn't they propel it back to Carrigtwohill and run round it there? (2) I'd say it was Lettraset on Vinyl myself. I mean to say the time you would spend programming all those places in when everybody knows full well where the train is going anyway. |

You missed your chance Drimnagh as 073 has operated L.E. on the Midleton Line to test signal interlocking.

All the Cork spotters missed it too Mr.Wanderer! It eluded us all and not even flange lubricator got it! Hehehe or the famous H Gricer and Malcolm was no where to be seen. Her second time down to the branch it was and not even the first time did anybody really get her apart from the "privledged few". Lol. Oh well, will be ironic if 073 goes down tomorrow morning with the mk4s on a gauging trial! May elude all of us again. |
