I suppose when you have nothing else to do with your life,you will try force yourself to like Railcars...but its not for me or 071's forever or for the majority of people that have any sense. Yesterday's 07:40 Rosslare - Connolly would probably still be in Rosslare trying to blow off the brakes.

First things first. Locos are different to Units. They both have their plus and minus sides. The 071s are into their 31st year in service. While the 2800s are in their 8th year. Not very good for comparing. When the Mk3s were introduced in the Mid Eighties the 071s were in their 8th year. They worked the Mk3s, from what I've been told with ease on the Cork Mainline, doing peak trains with far greater loads, 90mph (and higher sometimes) with full Air Braked trains, right up until the 201s were introduced in 1994/5. The other thing to remember is that the 2800s are a Commuter train doing an Inter City job. Internally, comfort, ride quailty and vibrations they are terrible. A complete insult to the tax paying and fare paying public who deserve far better than the current stock in place. This change is coming in the form of 22ks which hopefully will generate some lost passengers from the days of the dying Mk2s and from the useless 27/28/2900 era of recent years. What is good about the 2800s is their reliability, which in my view is second to none for a commuter railcar. The duties they have to do is quite strenuous for a Commuter train. I see them trundling up and down past my house everyday doing their duty quite happily. The only thing I fear is that the years spent on the DSE will not hold them in good fortune in years down the line as they have been thrashed to pieces. MV038, you say you don't think the 071s deserve the cult following they have had of late. Well, I don't believe the 2800s deserve the cult following they have had of late. What interest one could find with the same 10 pairs going up and down the same line day in day out is beyond me. But everyone has their own interests and thats up to them!! The same old people again and again. I as i've stated countless times think 071s are just another locomotive nothing special, thats my opinion like others think 2800s are brilliant or 141s are the bees knees or 071s are worth travelling for 15000 miles behind. For the record my preferences in rolling stock would be first and foremost 121s/141s/181s, then 2700s, 2800s, 29000s, 201s, 22000s, track machines and lastly 071s. A mix of trains. Every person is entitled to grice whatever they enjoy, its very unfair to attack someone because they choose to like one train over another. In fairness to pick a reverse scenario 227Riverlaune used to be very very pro DMU and he changed his preferences as he decided to concentrate on 071s as they were about to go and he now finds them more interesting and I respect that and I don't recall anyone attacking him for it nor should they. If MV038 chooses to grice 2800s why does he get attacked? I griced 071s 201s Internationals, MK2s and Push Pulls with him and others in the last several months so to turn on him as he defends 2800s is completely mindless. If the "handful" of gricers who braved the steam enthusiast calling them nuts hadn't been clever enough to photograph or log performances of Sulzers and other diesels in their early days a huge part of our diesel history would've been lost as why would anyone want to photograph what were seen as characterless at the time. All these anti one train type or another serve to do is turn people off the hobby in even greater numbers. A Hobby not a War indeed. We maybe all need to stop and remember this at times. Its ok. I won't tell your mates you griced a railcar..........again

Posts: 451 (15/05/08 21:14:37) Full Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Listen lads I like trains but in the 071s defense our 26s down here when they come in on lets say the 1635 ex Mallow or any of the evening Mallow servies and the driver in from Mallow stops the train pulls the emergancy brake to clear the system and as a safety procedure for the next driver, next driver comes in can't blow off the brake high idle comes on and then away we go. And even when down in Cobh the odd time a 27 would fail she would be started up and well I have never heard a high idle on a 27 but by the sounds of it they take ages to blow off the brake. But saying that 081 and 076 didn't exactly blow off the brakes extremelly quick down in Ennis both Fridays and when 076 was down here operating the 2115 ex Tralee during January she didn't exactly blow off the brakes that fast either. So all in all lads lets just stop about this blowing off of the brakes thing and just admit that the 201s are the best thing out there! Well the 28 are an improvement on the 27s for the DSE and the 27s are an improvement on the 26s down here in Cork. there's always room for improvement.

GM160 will confirm this if he wants, but I can recall us saying that we hated the 071s working the Cravens and most defiantly the liner and other trains in the early 00's on the Northern line. Trains come and go. People like different ones, for different reasons. I personally prefer conventionally hauled trains, as there is more variety. Unfortunately the future for such trains on Irish Rail is over and people need to accept that. I for one will and am heading abroad in search of real trains on networks where the railway feeling, that used to be on IE, is. Sadly it has turned into a plastic, red tape businness, that is out to make as much money as possible. I see nothing wrog with that, I work in the private sector and I'm well used to it at this stage, but thats not what I get enthusiam out of. Anyway the 2800s were looking fine this evening on their final 30 miles up to Drogheda this evening on the ex Rosslare, after their gruelling diagram. I was only saying to someone recently how much I hated it when 071s showed up on the Dundalk liner instead of a pair of bo-bos. I used to prefer seeing 201s on it as they were so rare on northern line freight. Wasn't so bad 071s being on Cravens, that was the norm, but it was a real treat when a pair turned up on the Cravens especially on the 1615 Pearse - Drogheda service (or as we used to know it as the "half-four" out of Raheny). No better sound than a pair roaring out of Raheny on notch 8 with six Cravens and a van! That was by far my favourite passenger working of the day! Happy memories! Like a few people have said, we all like different trains for whatever reason, but people should not be verbally attacked for it, no matter what we like or dislike! This is supposed to be a hobby, therefore enjoyable for everyone, so lets try and keep it that way and no more arguing and attacking people please! GM 160

My personal view on this is that people need to calm down somewhat. Please try to think of the implications of what you post - you may not view it as offensive, but others may do. A little bit of respect for each other's opinions might go a long way, whether you agree with them or not. When ANY part of a train fails it looks bad on the railway, be it a railcar or a loco or a coach. All mechanical equipment will fail at some point, so making posts extolling the virtue of loco over railcar or vice versa is not going to achieve anything, except to perhaps start heated debates. People tend to get very emotional about this, be it when steam gave way to diesel locos and now when loco hauled trains give way to DMUs. The fact of the situation is that the decision has been made (whether for good or bad) and it is happening, and no amount of emotional outbursts is going to change this. I have a day job to do, and in between that I like to come onto IRN to read some interesting posts about Irish railways (current and the past). I do not want to come here to read flame wars between posters over railcars-vs-loco hauled trains. Some of what has been posted here recently and in other threads saddens me as I see people posting comments that are clearly inflammatory (whether posted in jest or not). We have a reasonably relaxed moderation policy here, and I do not want to spend my time (be it during work or in the evenings) having to take phone calls about potentially inflammatory posts, and then be ringing fellow managers to get their view. Last night I was going out for the evening and I got called about this thread by a couple of people. I then had to ring another manager to get him to look at it and remind people of the rules of the board. I really do have better things to do than to have to put up with this sort of behaviour. I like to think that IRN is a valuable resource, providing an informative and topical view on Irish railways. However, some of the nonsense posted by a small number of people is making this site lose credibility as a serious website. This happened once before on MSN and that is why we moved to YUKU, where we can remove posts that break rules. We have had almost a year of releative peace and calm, and now it seems to all get inflamed again. It is things like this that make me question whether running a messageboard on IRN (which I may add we managers pay for out of our own pockets without asking for payment from members) is worthwhile or not, and I have to admit that if this nonsense continues I for one will be taking a view that maybe its time is up. I would appeal to people to stop making inflammatory posts and to think before they type. Whether you have an interest in railcars or loco hauled trains, please try to respect the other point of view. It's not much to ask. If you can't do that, then perhaps move elsewhere. I really have better things to do with my time than to have to moderate this sort of stuff. End of rant. Platform 10

Your work is much appreciated, and your comments on the workings if Irish Rail have always been a rock of common sense. Anyhow back to business: what about those 2800s? Are there any data which indicate thier reliability? A year or so back, the 29000s were credited with a failure rate (x 1000 miles between failures) which was apparently about the lowest in Europe. Do the 2800s match this? I would not be surprised.

Posts: 242 (16/05/08 08:56:01) Full Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	In 2008 so far the 2800 class has the lowest failure rate in the entire IE passanger fleet. 18 out of the 20 cars are required to work 7 days a week. It is quite common to find all 20 cars in service. For a DMU they spend the longest time away from depot than any other class. I was again replacing the 071/mk2 sets on the Rosslare with DMU trains and the 2700 class well lets just say were not up to the job! Since the 2800 class took over the route they have become the most reliable stock ever to work the route and the 22000 class will find it hard to match the 2800 class for reliability when (or if) they take over the Dublin Rosslare service. www.irishrailcargricersassociation.yuku.com

This is my first post on YUKU since it went live after we replaced MSN last year. Like P10 and the other "lads behind the scenes", we went to a lot of hassle and expense to get this board and the irishrailwaynews website up and running. I promised my peers that I would be taking a back seat as an active member once this work was complete, and bar a wee bit of moderation here and there, that's what I've done. However, and as I will explain below, events of late have forced me to momentarily renounce my vow of silence and speak out. As P10 said, we set up this site and run to facilitate people of like minded interest by providing them with a site where they can discuss a shared interest. This is no easy task as everything is met from our own resources in terms of time, effort and cost. And we do all this to facilitate peoples enjoyment of matters relating to Irish Rail and nothing else. We don't do it for any gain, and certainly not for prestige. We're not involved in this site to referee petty spats and rows over whether a 071 is better or worse than a 2800, or more to the point, to bear witness personalised attacks which seem to be borne for no good reason. Being quite blunt about it, I have far more important and pressing things to worry about than the merits of an 071 -V- 2800. And funnily enough, so do most other reasonable people. But nonetheless, some things have to be said and I'll say them. What I have seen of late is strangely reminiscent of the troubles we had in the middle of last year on MSN. At that time, we had a spate of inflammatory incidents on the board which seemed to stem from a certain quarter. We (i.e. the managers) formed the opinion that one individual was behind it all. There were disgraceful comments made about senior managers and employees who work in Irish Rail, and a few barbs about ordinary members of this board. Even the RPSI and other interest groups were caned for no good reason. And in the end, it got so bad that the board almost became unmanageable. We had no option but to introduce moderation and vet each and every post prior to publication. That caused a lot of upset among our bona fide members but our hands were tied by the hostile situation which only abated when we went to Yuku. After several weeks of relative calm of late, the "MSN malaise" has sadly become apparent again with people turning on others over things that are just petty and stupid. I cannot believe how a very small number of supposedly like-minded people can behave like schoolyard thugs. There is no call for this sort of nonsense anywhere, and certainly not here. I trust that the status quo will return going forward and things will quieten down again. That managers of IRN are determined that this board will not be used by the more disagreeable elements out there as a means of settling scores, name calling, aggression or ranting down right unfair criticism. Those who are responsible for this carry-on know who they are and should be ashamed of themselves. They are not going to drag this board down to their level and I assure every "normal right thinking member" of IRN that we who run this site will vigorously protect this board and those who actively contribute to making it the good site that it is. We don't care whether they like 2800's, 071's or whatever, once they behave with respect for others and obey the rules. Finally I would like to thank those members who have sent us messages of support both publicly and privately, and also those who to time to express their concern at recent events. It's nice to say that it is the good and decent folk around here that makes this site what it is. Anyway rant over. Please continue with the 2800 thread ! I'm going back into exile... Regards Bimbo

Tongue in cheek humour is excepted by different people in different ways, I mean take a look at message 138, what can I say, I can say nothing, all I can do is smile, people who make me smile are good people, unimportant things die down, this time next week some gricer wondering why the heck a 2800 worked into Docklands and someone else no douth will have the answer. But back on thread takes me back to Thursday 6th July 2000, twas a warm day, looking into the dardinell sidings I saw a railcar set with golden windows, yes windows of gold, I had to investigate, so I goes into the dardinells sidings, and there they where, but it was an optical illusion, the low evening sun was hitting on the bran new windows of the new railcars 2801+2802 making them look like windows of gold, loco 143 had hauled them in from the ship earlier that afternoon, Im into the locohaul meself, but I'd a good feeling that day, may seem strange. 2801 had on its scoll ''special charter'' hmmm......... ya there was somthing special. Say compare like with like, when the 071class where 10years old in 1986, these work horses worked 24hour rosters, the 8.00 to Belfast and back to Connolly, then the same again 15.00 to Belfast and back to Connolly to work the down-night Galway mail via Moate and back the following morning with the up Galway liner into NW via Portarlington, just about enough time in between to fuel the loco and clean the windows. If say a DMU attemped to do the same roster it would collapsed and seized up, now the 071s are 32years old, I'II say no more, but just 2quotes 2800's Forever . . . and 071s Forever . . . fellow gricers, it ain't goin happen, both quotes are fiction. btw just to clear up a little confusion, 2gricers at war over liveries, 2600s, 2700s 2800s arrived in the orange arrow livery, the 2900s arrived in the ''suburban tooth paste'' livery, bloody hell, give me strenght, good night and Kind Regards to all, h.gricer
