Big GMs on Small GMs duties. |
Lead | |
|
After my latest travels I decided to set up a new thread seeing 071 and 201 class locos doing jobs that 141/181 class locos were expected to do. It looking more evident that there will be a mass withdrawal of small Gms Locos over the next few months. I am talking about pilot and per way work.

To start with this thread on Sunday 20 of January 082 was on pilot duties at Limerick Station. Saw 077 in Portlaoise per way yard.

077 in Portlaios yard is there on standby I think. Always had 071s on standby, the odd time maybe a 201s. Standby was only really introduced once the Corks went hourly. For a time there used to be pairs @ Athlone on standby, thats now reverted to 071s. I suspect the reason that 082 shunt released the Limerick stock was because it was handily there, no need to use a small GM if its tucked down the back of a siding and an 071 is sitting right beside the mainline.

I thinks it was 079 in Portlaoise. It is definately pilot today. There was a Portlaoise pilot up to the late 1980s it used to work anywhere needed from Tullamore to Roscrea, there used to be a bacon train to Roscrea worked by it. There was also occasional traffic out the stub of the Waterford branch to the Bord na Mona works at Coolnamona and private sidings to an Esso oil terminal and Worsted Mills adjacent to the Sleeper factory
It came back to life in the early 1990s whereby the engine off the fertilizer would stable in the bay platform until either returning with the empties or going out to assist a failed train. Both 071s and 201s often appeared on this. The end for pairs of 141s came when 145 assisted an up Cork which failed near Portlaoise, it in turn failed and I think it and the 201 were replaced by another 2x 141s and these also failed. After that small GMs were effectively banned from rescue duty on the Cork line although they have seen use in Athlone and Waterford since that time. |

Actually funny you should say that GM233, no thunderbird at Limerick Jctn last Saturday or at Thurles only 187 around...
Any ideas what's going on there? And by the way GM233 you wouldn't have anything to do with GM233 written in the muck on 167? ;) |

Coming to mind it is 079 that I saw in Portlaoise. Looking through Mr. Wanderer's photos over the last week an 071 class loco did a Dart transfer to or from Inchicore. That was another task that used to be handled by a small GM.

210 and 214 were both observed on Heuston pilot duties yesterday very unusual to see 201s on these duties however one can see the orange 201s being used more
and more on this kind of work as loco hauled passenger turns dry up.

Indeed indeed GM233, as I posted in the 071thread, 076 on PWD duties today, as for small GMs their days are definitely numbered, 167 was sent up from the WRC
last week and was the Heuston pilot today, I can only describe it as a rust bucket, it won't have to be cut up, just collapse in on its self, poor thing,
big question now is, which locos will be saved for preservation, I'II put me money on 144, great loco, ya won't see that doing pilot duties, think that
worked the last bag cement train to Nenagh, twas always a Limerick loco, Limerick held on to the best locos.

Well said hgricer. 167 has a new modification - floor air conditioning - the body work on the cab doors have rusted away to give better ventilation - it was
ill last week when I last saw her... I would second you on 144 and perhaps pitch in 147 as a second candidate a personal favorite of mine, again always found
in Limerick....

Well, hstacpoole and h.gricer, I fear that you may be right in both 144 and 147 being kept for preservation, but I really hope it isn't going to be those
two! 187 along with 144 and 147 are my least favourite bo-bos left in existance! (Also didn't like 168 or 176). They are all far too common, well for me
anyway; everywhere I go those locos seem to follow me!
It wouldn't be difficult to guess which bo-bo I'd like to be preserved! 160 of course! Unfortunately, I really can't see it being kept given its current condition, certainly is not in the best of health (has not been out on the main line since December 2006)! Apart from 160, others I'd like to see preserved would be: 142, 146, 149, 152(unlikely!), 170, 177, 185, 190. GM 160 |

Well you know what they say h gricer and hstacpoole, the locos that are the tattiest and most faded usually are (usually!) the most reliable, they stay away
from the paint shop over the years, always out earning their keep!!

Well GM160, I can understand why 160 should be kept from your perspective. 190 is another one I kind of like so that would be a candidate in my book. However
you never end up getting the engines you like being preserved. 131 was always my favourite 121- always on the up mail from Cork and worked the LJCT shuttle.
013 was my favourite A Class always on the barytes to Foynes, another Limerick engine (but as a limerick man I suppose I am bias!). The important thing is that
a number of them do end up being preserved for future generations to enjoy, regardless of numbers. Going back to 147, the other reason why I would like to see
it preserved is that it worked the last revenue earning train to Newcastle west on 31 October 1975 - local bias!

Well 123 is scrapped, not even an example of a four +#%%%!+ beet wagon kept for our offsprings to see when we are dead and gone.
I think it has to be said to scrap everything else, sure why keep it? It's old, orange and in the way..what a load of ... Loco's were bombed years ago, rebuilt and were well able to keep going. Loco's are universal, railcars can only do one thing. It's great to see the persistence in the West to keep the few loco's left doing Freight. Lets hope to see more of it comong on stream with plenty of Small GM'S Yes Sir. |

I like 152,mainly because its the only 15x left in service and on the rails. It is somehow still going.Would like to see it repainted but aint gonna happen

152+190 for me brilliant pair not one fault plenty of clag and thrash outa them too and not one mechanical fault but my only fault is when they left alot of us
stranded at Limerick Jctn last year!

Ya I agree, 152 and 177 just don't look well together, put 177 with 146 and put 152+190 back together now, heck start a campaign, put these 2work horses
back together now, I say.

Forget about big GMs on small GMs duties.
The real topic is the days of small GMs on big GMs duties, such as a single 141 departing Ballina in 1987 hauling a dead 141, the Asahi liner, and an empty fertiliser. Or 163 departing from the cement siding at Athenry in 1996 with a laden timber! The howl passing Attymon incredible! Or single 15X members on the Belfast/Dublin freight. Or 141s on the subarbans in the 1990s. Or Or Or Or Or |
