Steam engine revival recalls heyday of West Clare Railway

Railway immortalised by Percy French is back on track thanks to local steam enthusiasts, writes ÉIBHIR MULQUEEN

JACKIE WHELAN remembers loading turf on a wagon to supply the West Clare Railway as a nine-year-old in 1948. It was an important part of the local economy before it became the last of Ireland's narrow gauge railways to close in 1961....

That was a positive post, by the way, expressing a delight that the aul'lass was steaming again when many thought she was dead or beyond restoration.

Excellent job - great to see the West Clare loco back again. Makes me feel old to think that I took a photo of it plinthed! Well done to all concerned. A shining example of what can be done.

No 5C Was Sucessfuly Steamed In Moyasta Today, The first time In Ireland since 1952 Steam Returned to the West Clare Railway.

From what I can remember of Patterson's C&L book, they were first hacked off and buried in Arigna yard. Stationmaster's son found em. They were put back on, but shortly after they were removed again and disappeared for good!

Apparently they were thrown down a well somewhere on the line (possibly a source for a water tower/column?). That should narrow down the search a bit!

There was indeed "talk" of regauging the WCR- I have seen an old CIE file dealing with it somewhere in the IE archives. As for the identity of the "Sinn Fein" C & L loco, Garfield, I stand corrected.... I was mixing it up with the story (corroborated by my late grandmother who was living in Ballinamoer when it happened) of how No. 8 "Queen Victoris"'s plates were removed and probably dumped away out the line on the Arigna branch. What a find that would be...

Not sure if it is a rural legend but there was talk of standard gauging the West Clare in CIE days.

Apparently there's an extension being built onto the existing shed there to house the big diesels. Should be ideal interim accomodation for the ITG.
